How to take better product photos at home - 8 simple tips

Good product photography does not require a large studio. The biggest improvements usually come from controlling the light, using a simple background and keeping your setup consistent.

1. Use plenty of soft light

A single hard light source creates strong shadows and reflections. Diffusing the light or using more than one source at different angles helps reveal the shape of the product more evenly.

2. Avoid mixing different light sources

Daylight, a warm household bulb and a cool LED used at the same time can create color casts that are difficult to correct consistently.

3. Use a simple background

White or neutral backgrounds work well for most products. Lifestyle images are useful as an addition, but they should not be the only way the product is shown.

4. Stabilize your camera or phone

A tripod helps you maintain the same framing across a product series and reduces camera shake when the available light is weaker.

5. Set white balance

If your device allows it, use a fixed white balance rather than automatic white balance. This helps keep colors consistent across a complete set of images.

6. Show several types of views

Prepare a main image, side and rear views, important details, a sense of scale and, where useful, the product in use. A customer should be able to understand the item without guessing its proportions.

7. Do not over-edit

Adjusting brightness, contrast and white balance is often enough. Heavy editing can make the product color look different from the real item.

8. Build a repeatable setup

If you photograph products regularly, mark the position of the tripod, background and lights. A repeatable setup speeds up work and helps keep the whole catalog visually consistent.

Lighting for a small setup

A flexible setup can use a dual-arm LED light for photography and video. When choosing a set, pay attention to the stand and to whether the light sources can be positioned on both sides of the product.
